If you’re missing a tooth or teeth then a dental implant is the solution for you

If you have lost a tooth then a dental implant is the best way to maintain optimal oral health. The great thing about dental implants is that they are indistinguishable from your natural teeth both aesthetically and functionally.

The biggest reason to replace that missing tooth is because of what a missing tooth will do to your jaw. Did you know that the bone holding our teeth in place has a specific name? And that this bone exists exclusively to hold our teeth in place: this bone is called the alveolar bone and when a tooth is lost it begins to dissolve almost immediately. Once a tooth is gone, studies show that up to 30% of bone loss occurs in the first six months. This loss of bone—if not treated—will lead to other problems, firstly, when a tooth is missing the teeth on either side will twist in an attempt to cover the gap left by the missing teeth. Secondly, as the alveolar bone dissolves, it will weaken the jaw bone and that can result in further tooth loss. Another issue is gum disease. Tooth loss can lead to gum disease and gum disease can lead to various other health concerns.

A dental implant can save you and your oral health…

At Ironside Advanced Dental we know that dental implants are an authentic and long-term solution to replacing a missing tooth. Our dedicated team of highly-trained and skilled prosthodontists are able to give you the very best in dental treatments to help give you a healthy functional smile.

A dental implant is a titanium screw that is surgically inserted into the jaw to act as an anchor for a crown or bridge. This screw takes the role of the tooth root and does this—over time—by bonding with your jawbone to replicate the tooth root. By bonding to the jawbone the dental implant stops any further damage to the alveolar bone; it also ensures that (if looked after properly) the implant will last a lifetime.

Lasting a lifetime…dental implant and your health

If looked after properly the dental implant can last a lifetime. And by ‘looked after properly’ we mean brushing your teeth (at least) twice a day and flossing at least once a day (preferably at night before you go to bed).

The procedure for a dental implant takes a few dental appointments to complete: firstly, the implant is surgically implanted into the jawbone. Then once the bone has fused to the jawbone (effectively the bone grows and attaches itself to the implant) it is ready to have the natural-looking prosthetic tooth attached. Once the procedure is complete you’ll have a fully functional smile again allowing you to eat and drink normally as if you’d never lost a tooth.
