Why visit the dentist? Or, what your smile is saying to strangers

Studies show that passers-by judge you on your teeth

The appearance of your teeth can tell strangers a little bit about you. If you have healthy-looking white teeth, one psychologist said it tells strangers you care about your health and appearance. Since smoking discolours your teeth, healthy-looking teeth can also be an indication that a person doesn’t smoke (unless the smoker had their teeth whitened and dental veneers placed…).

For these social reasons and even a few professional reasons too, having healthy-looking teeth can be an important part of your everyday life.

Whether you are 30 or 65, healthy-looking teeth are important

With such a wide range of options currently available, it is now easier than ever to have healthy-looking teeth.

You may have noticed no mention of “whiter, brighter teeth,” this is because healthy-looking teeth are the true aim of cosmetic dentistry. It shouldn’t be about bleaching your teeth until they can reflect the sun. Proper cosmetic dentistry is about assessing your oral health, and your face and determining what is the best treatment for you.

What is the best treatment for you?

For many people a treatment of teeth whitening can provide their desired results: and for many of Ironside Advanced Dental’s patients, the desired result is to not have teeth which are stained or discoloured.

For other patients, treatment may be a little more involved. The thing to keep in mind is at Ironside Advanced Dental our aim is to provide the treatment that achieves what you want and helps to maintain your oral health. So, in cases where teeth whitening won’t have an effect, the best solution may be porcelain veneers; or for a particularly bad tooth, a dental crown may be suitable.

It is important to visit Dr Ironside so he can assess your oral health and advise you on the best course of action. We should also note that teeth whitening isn’t permanent, especially if you return to drinking coffee, tea, or wine straight away.

By drinking water you will be able to minimise the staining effects of tea or coffee (and drinking white coffee and tea will also reduce the risk of staining). However, teeth whitening does not last forever. Every 10 to 12 months you’ll need to come back for a touch-up kit that will allow you to keep your teeth whiter while you’re home.

Do stained teeth negatively affect my health?

It depends on why your teeth are stained. If your teeth are stained for purely cosmetic reasons then it is unlikely that stained teeth will affect your health.

However, if the reason for the stain or discolouration of a tooth is due to decay then not having this treated could—potentially—result in pain, swelling, and eventually tooth loss.
